Language

Mark Pagel says that we thrive in a way that no other species does, this because of our ability to produce language. According to the author, this is the most valuable feature we have and it is a wonderful irony that our languages exist to prevent us from communicating. In this sense, I agree with Pagel when he talks about the subversive power of language, language has the potential to change reality. As humans we have an amazing power, language acting as a container of culture, allows us to create realities, creating distinctions between people, between men and women, often excluding other diversities. However, today we have the perfect tool to convert that reality. Mr. Page's saying "social learning is a visual theft" means that we can learn from other people by watching, coping and imitating, in this process, we steal the best ideas for other people. For me, this discussion is not necessarily a negative thing because it is something that we currently have ...

Writing an introduction

Background Anthropology is configured as the study of the human being in an integral way, both in the present and in the future, and even in a future perspective, it’s a science that studies the cultural, social and physical spheres of the human being. In our country, the Anthropology is part of the social sciences, dividing his field of study into 3; Social Anthropology, Archaeology and Physical Anthropology. According to the portal uchile.cl, Social Anthropology is dedicated to the study of contemporary human groups”, Archeology deals with research and analysis of the material culture of societies from the remote and recent past” and Physical Anthropology studies human biology in relation to culture. Chile, is a relatively new country in the field of anthropology, although it opened in the 70s at the University of Chile, it has gradually been incorporated into other universities. However, one of the main problems of anthropology in our country is that the "physical" m...

Post 8: Career-related website

Imagen
Hi! Everyone, today i will talk about a anthropology related website. As you know, I’m an anthropology student at the University of Chile, since 2017, so I’m quite new in this field but, I am very interested and excited  in this career. In this respect, there is a website that i discovered a couple of years ago, when i became interested in anthropology, the website is called  “El antropólogo principiante” or  ‘The beginner anthropologist’ in English. This is a very interesting blog; it belongs to a former student of anthropology from Spain, specifically from the UNED University (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) in Madrid. The blog tells the experience of the author, Juan, after having studied 4 years of anthropology. He wrote about his experiences studying the career, also he explains why he left the career after 4 years!!!  OMG. But the most interesting part about the website, are the many sections that you can find, the author talks about di...

Post 7: Wild animals and pets

Hi everyone! In today's post, i would like to talk about wild animals and pets. First of all, i want to ask you something, do you consider yourself an animal lover? why? If you had asked me this cuestion a few years ago -five years ago probably- i probably woud have answered "not so much". You will wonder why i used to think that way? This is because, when i was a kid i never had a pet. I used to play with my cousin's dog but one day, he bit me really hard, so from that time i was very afraid about dogs and animals in general.  But now, if you ask me that, i definitely consider myself as an animal lover! I'm saying this because i met some people, like my boyfriend, who's open their heart to show me their pets and it was a beautiful and magic oportunity to me. Me, as an animal lover today, i totally disagree with the use of animals of medical researh and any type of animal cruelty. I don't think that the human being should make use of animals for...

POST 6: POST GRADUATE STUDIES

Imagen
Hi everyone! Today i would like to talk you about a postgraduate course that i would consider taking in the future.   As an anthropology student, I would like to take a future postgraduate course with something related to my career, of course. But, in this sense, I think that everything could be related with anthropology! Actually, I've been thinking for a long time, that if in the future I had to take a postgraduate course, it would be something related to Archeology and Egyptology. Since I was a child I loved when I was in school, we saw the "Great Civilizations", Ancient Egypt was my favorite. Everything about Egypt It caught my attention, so every time I see it in TV documentaries and movies, I see it. I’ve been researching and I noticed that in our University there is a diploma course called “Egyptology and Ancient Middle East”, so I think Chile would be an interesting place to start my  research about Egypt. Ideally i would like to take the course in the af...

Post 5: My Future Job

Think about the future is a thing that doesn’t work so much for me… As you know, today I’m an anthropologist student, so I guess that my future job will be guided in this particular line. Although i’m not 100% sure of what major subject I’m going to choose (Social Anthropology or Archaeology) I would like to imagine a job where I can be “free”. In others words,   work outdoors, out of the city, perhaps   with communities of people, having an impact in their lives and help them and contribute to "create a better world to live". I wouldn’t like an academic job where I’ll spend all day in an office behind a computer, I would like to be with different types of communities or investigate extinct societies. As I said, I can’t choose between Social Anthropology or Archaeology because I’m interested in both specialties, if it were possible to do both things at the same time, I would do it!... Despite this I’m 100% sure that I would love to travel the most of the time, esp...
